Depression

Depression affects how a person thinks, feels, and handles daily activities. It goes beyond feeling sad or low; it’s a persistent state of deep sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness that can interfere with one’s ability to function normally. It often involves a loss of interest or pleasure in activities, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, and sometimes thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a natural response to stress or perceived threats. It’s characterized by feelings of worry, nervousness, or unease about future events, often accompanied by physical sensations like increased heart rate, sweating, trembling, or difficulty concentrating.

People with anxiety disorders may experience overwhelming, prolonged anxiety that interferes with daily life. They might have difficulty controlling their worries, experience irrational fears, or avoid certain situations that trigger their anxiety.

Addiction

Addiction is a complex condition characterised by the compulsive engagement in a substance or behaviour despite negative consequences. It’s often marked by an inability to control or stop the use of a substance (such as drugs, alcohol, or even activities like gambling or gaming) despite knowing the harm it causes. Addiction alters the brain’s reward system, leading to intense cravings and a continued pursuit of the substance or behaviour to achieve the desired effect or relief.

Grief & Loss

Grief or loss refers to the emotional suffering experienced when someone or something significant is no longer present in your life. It’s a natural response to losing someone or something dear, such as the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, the loss of a job, or even significant life changes like moving away from a familiar place.

Grief is a deeply personal experience and can manifest in various ways, including feelings of sadness, disbelief, anger, guilt, or even physical symptoms like fatigue or changes in appetite. It’s not a linear process and can occur in stages or waves, with emotions ebbing and flowing over time.

Relationship Problems

There are times in relationships when things aren’t going well.  Sometimes this is to do with conflicting expectations, difficulties in communicating your needs and exceeding demands.

Some people come to therapy to work on their own issues that maybe impacting upon the relationship.

Trust can be broken in relationships and often therapy can be used to have space to think about your future, Others may recognise that not all marriages and relationships are salvageable.

Trauma & PTSD

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health issue that can develop after a person is exposed to a traumatic event, such as sexual assault, warfare, traffic collisions, or other threats on a person’s life.

Diagnosis is based on the presence of specific symptoms following a traumatic event. These include hyperarousal, avoidance and intrusive thoughts.

PTSD can occur from a single event trauma (i.e. assault) or as a result of a number of traumas (i.e. childhood sexual abuse).

These are just a few of the issues we can help with. If you feel none of the above match what you’re feeling please do not be put off, we offer free initial consultations to see if counselling can help you.
